About this app

Same item. Different city. Different bin. Recycling rules change block by block, and the label on the package will not tell you which bin you are standing in front of. EarthSort will. POINT. SNAP. KNOW. Take a photo of any item. EarthSort identifies the material with AI, checks it against your local recycling provider's actual rules, and gives you one clear answer: recycling, compost, or trash. WHY EARTHSORT Your city's rules, not generic advice. EarthSort matches your location to your actual hauler or municipal provider. Move, travel, or visit family and the guidance follows you. No labels required. The chasing arrows symbol is not a promise that something is recyclable. EarthSort identifies what an item is actually made of, so misleading packaging does not decide for you. More than which bin. Some things do not belong in any curbside cart. When an item needs a special drop-off, EarthSort links you straight to the program that handles it, from mattress take-back to plastic film collection, so you know where it actually goes. Built for real items. Coffee cups, clamshells, pizza boxes, batteries, bubble mailers. The things people genuinely get wrong. Available in English, Spanish, and Simplified Chinese, with more languages on the way. Free. No ads. No account required to scan. HOW IT WORKS 1. Open EarthSort and snap a photo of the item. 2. The AI identifies the material and checks your local provider's rules. 3. You get a clear answer, plus the reasoning behind it. 4. Tap thumbs up or thumbs down to help improve accuracy for everyone in your area. WHY IT MATTERS One wrong item can contaminate an entire load, and contaminated loads end up in landfill. Getting it right at the bin is the single highest leverage moment in the recycling system, and it takes about three seconds. FOR CITIES AND PARTNERS EarthSort is built to support producer funded recycling education under laws like California SB 54 and Oregon's Recycling Modernization Act, including multilingual access requirements. If you work for a city, hauler, or producer responsibility organization, reach us at contact@earthsort.com. Your feedback is the engine. Every rating you give sharpens the answers for your neighbors.

What’s New

Version 2.6 Aug 13, 2026

Version 2.6 sharpens the answers and adds something new to the scan itself. Recycling tips as you scan. Short, practical tips now appear right in the scan flow, so you pick up something useful every time you use the app. Links straight to the programs that take the item. When something needs a special drop-off, EarthSort points you to the group that actually handles it, like Bye Bye Mattress for mattresses or Plastic Film Recycling for bags and wrap. You find out where it goes, not just that it does not belong in your bin. Clearer hazardous and special item guidance. Batteries, paint, electronics and similar items are now flagged separately from regular special handling, so dangerous items do not end up in the wrong bin. Clearer messages when your connection drops. If you lose signal, EarthSort tells you exactly what happened and what to do next. Smaller fixes. Confirmation before you log out, more reliable thumbs up and thumbs down on results, correct empty states in Spanish and Simplified Chinese, plus stability and performance improvements throughout. Every thumbs up and thumbs down goes straight into improving accuracy for your area. Keep them coming.
