About this app

Step into the rich histories of the Central Plateau iwi Uenuku, Tamakana and Tamahaki with 'Te Ahikā Tukuiho Ō Wainuiārua.' This educational app uses augmented reality (AR) to bring tūpuna stories to life, providing kaiako (teachers) and ākonga (students) a unique, interactive way to explore local history and mātauranga Māori. Developed in collaboration with iwi and community leaders, this app shares three captivating narratives: 1. Our Beginnings: Discover the celestial whakapapa of Uenuku ki Manganui-o-te-Ao, tracing the lineage of the Atua down through generations to the first human ancestors. Learn about their wisdom, courage, and connection to the Ruapehu rohe. 2. The Battle of Fire and Water: Witness the epic clash between Tarangata, the atua of fire, and the atua of water, Te Moana and Kiwa. Uncover how this mighty battle shaped the volcanic and oceanic landscapes we see today. 3. The Great Deluge of Tāne: Experience the consequences of greed and disregard for the teachings of Tāne, as a great flood reshapes the world. Discover the survival of those who chose to listen to Tāne’s wisdom and the enduring bond with the Patupaiarehe. FEATURES - AUGMENTED REALITY EXPERIENCES: Immerse yourself in beautifully animated scenes paired with narration in both Te Reo Māori and English. Bring the stories to life at your school or anywhere outdoors. - BILINGUAL NARRATION: Hear the stories told in Te Reo Māori and English, supporting language learning and cultural connection. - EDUCATIONAL VALUE: Designed for use in schools in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, the app supports the New Zealand curriculum, weaving together history, culture, and technology to enhance learning outcomes.
