About this app
Jacob's Colours is a simple, accessible communication app (AAC) for iPad. It gives people who find speech difficult a clear, friendly way to be heard — by tapping large picture buttons that speak words and phrases aloud. Designed for the kitchen table and the classroom, every button is big, bright, and well spaced, with high-contrast colours that suit low vision. There's nothing to learn and nothing to set up before the first tap. What it does • Tap a picture button to hear it spoken aloud • Open folders (like People, Feelings, Food, and Places) for more words • Play step-by-step social stories that are read aloud, one page at a time • Swipe through stories at your own pace Made for every user • Three button sizes — from a few very large buttons per page to a fuller board • High-contrast, colourful tiles designed to be easy to see • Large, well-spaced touch targets for less precise touch • Shake to go home — a gentle shake jumps back to the main board, for when the small Back and Home buttons are hard to tap (you can turn this off) • Add your own photos to buttons (for example, a photo of Mum or a friend) Carers are in control Everything is editable in Settings: • Add, edit, and remove buttons and folders • Write your own social stories • Choose the speaking voice and speed • Personalise the app with the user's name, so stories and prompts can address them directly • Pick a Personal Voice (iPadOS 17 and later) so the app can speak in a familiar voice Private by design Jacob's Colours works entirely on your device. It has no accounts, no ads, and no tracking, and it never sends your buttons, photos, stories, or settings anywhere. Speech is generated on-device. Tip: Pair Jacob's Colours with iPad's Guided Access (Settings → Accessibility → Guided Access) to keep the app in focus during use. The built-in tutorial shows you how.
