About this app
Four children have raided the dressing-up box and gone out to do some honest work in space. A colander. A cardboard rocket. A bedsheet cape. A borrowed high-vis jacket. Everything in this game is home-made except the planets, which are the only real things in it. You start on 100 clouds. You roll, and you move exactly what you rolled, in any direction you like. That last part is the whole game. There is no track carrying you along, so every roll is a decision. Work pays 50. You help the elderly stars, you drive space cargo, you clean the moon cars. Robbers take 75 if you cannot beat them, but they leave alone anyone down to their last 50, so nobody is ever ruined and nobody is ever out. Then there are the planets. Mars costs 100 to take on and pays 300. The black hole wants 500 to let anyone past, and everyone at the table can see whether you can pay it. Jupiter costs 200, and beating Jupiter wins the game. Losing a fight costs the fee and nothing else. No lost turn, no going backwards, no being sent home. You lost 75 clouds. Mars is still waiting. HOW IT IS PLAYED Two to four players pass one device round the table. One player is against the app. It uses the same dice, the same board and the same rules as you, and it does not cheat. It cannot see a roll before you can, and it does not quietly get better when it starts losing. It makes visible mistakes, because an opponent that never does is no opponent at all. Nothing counts down. There is no timer anywhere in the game, no streak to keep, no reason to come back today rather than next week. It waits. FOR PARENTS Cloud Chase is free, and that is the whole of it. There is nothing to buy, now or later: no in-app purchases, no adverts, no subscriptions, and nothing held back to unlock. It collects nothing. No account, no sign-in, no analytics, no tracking, no third party code of any kind. Nothing leaves the device, because there is nothing in the app that could send it: the game works in aeroplane mode from the first launch and never asks for the network. The one link out of the app is the privacy policy, and it sits behind a parental gate in Settings. A game runs about half an hour against one opponent. It is meant to be played the way a board game is played, in one sitting, with somebody else in the room. WHAT IS IN IT One to four players. Pass and play, or solo against the app. A hand-drawn board with junctions in it, not a single track. Four travellers: Pip, Box, Kit and Mo. Original art and original music. Nothing bought in, nothing borrowed. VoiceOver on the controls and the cloud counter, Dynamic Type, and a Reduce Motion setting the game honours. Dark throughout, because it is set in space. Written for eight to eleven year olds. Younger children play it well with somebody reading the tile names out.
