ERA: VHS & Retro Video Camera

About this app

Pick a camera. Shoot. What you get looks and sounds like that machine recorded it. ERA is a catalogue of cameras spanning six decades: VHS decks, tape camcorders, 2003 digicams, security monitors, Super 8 and 16mm film, drugstore 35mm, disposables, night vision, mid-2000s phones and webcams, plus six colour looks and three kinds of daylight. Choose one before you press the shutter and watch the world through it live in the viewfinder, or open any clip or photo already on your camera roll. NOT A FILTER. A DIFFERENT CAMERA. Filters tint the picture. ERA re-records it. VHS loses detail sideways and smears its colour to the right, the way tape actually did. A camcorder's bright windows bleed into vertical streaks. Super 8 judders at 18 frames with real gate weave. A security camera drops to 12 fps and gets noisier as the room gets darker. Every detail is modelled on the real machine's behaviour, not a colour wash with grain on top. THE SOUND CHANGES TOO. A 1998 clip with crisp modern stereo underneath it is obviously fake, even if you can't say why. Every camera in ERA treats the audio as part of the look: tape hiss, worn transports, breathing auto-gain, pinhole microphones, the squeeze of an old codec. It is half of what makes a shot believable, and it is on by default. Momentum comes from crawler snapshots for the tracked storefront. “Viral growth signal” means unusually fast recent rating gains; it is an indicator, not download data.
