About this app
The Humie app helps kids aged 3-8 and their parents build emotional literacy (EQ) by integrating reflective practice with popular TV. Featuring a curated library of kids' favorite titles like Bluey, The Octonauts, The Magic School Bus, Gabby's Dollhouse, and many more. With Humie, watching becomes an interactive experience that builds empathy and resilience as viewers practice skills like perspective-taking and emotion labeling through playful activities with some of their favorite characters. The habit of reflection that Humie fosters also prepares young viewers to engage with other media more thoughtfully. Developed by Columbia cognitive scientists with funding from the National Science Foundation, the app has been designed and tested in collaboration with leading kids' media experts. Humie meets families where they are, providing reassurance to parents about their kids' screen time as well as co-watching support. Humie helps grownups become better co-viewing partners and acts as a co-viewing companion when a caretaker isn't available. Research has shown that just 30 minutes a week watching with Humie: - improves kids' emotional vocabulary - increases discussions of emotions between parents and kids - improves kids' emotion management With our "Pay It Forward" subscription model, paid Humie subscriptions make the app accessible for free to those unable to afford it. A portion of the subscription also goes to support the subscriber's school PTA, if they select one.
