About this app
Pistonly is an AI mechanic. Most OBD2 scanners show a code and leave you to Google it. Pistonly reads the code, checks it against your car's service history, names the likely cause, and tells you whether the car is safe to drive. THE AI DIAGNOSTICIAN • Add your car by VIN: make, model, generation and engine fill themselves in. • Add codes live from an adapter, or type in a dealer scan: PIWIS, ISTA, VCDS/ODIS, XENTRY, Techstream and more. • The AI works through your service history, ranks the likely causes and gives you an ordered checklist. No history yet? A few questions build one. • See what actually fixed this code for owners of the same car, and what you already tried on yours. • Then keep asking: the chat knows this car's codes, history and last verdict. WHAT OIL, WHICH FUEL The approval your engine needs, not just the viscosity: capacity, interval, and the octane worth paying for on this engine. No adapter needed. PARAMETERS THE STANDARD SET NEVER SHOWS Diagnostic profiles for 205 models ship with the app, so Pistonly reads what generic OBD2 never exposes: the pressure in each individual tyre, steering angle, temperatures and voltages from modules generic mode never reaches. A Cayenne has 28 of these, a RAV4 has 215. Pro. WHAT IS THAT LIGHT ON MY DASHBOARD? Pick the symbol or describe it in your own words, even without an adapter. You get what it means on your car, how urgent it is, and which codes to look for. CAN I DRIVE IT? Every code carries a plain answer: drive on, drivable but fix it, or better not to drive. Your garage turns it into a health score out of 100. FREE REPAIRS YOU'RE OWED Pistonly checks the manufacturer's safety recalls for your model and year. A dealer does that work free of charge, whoever owns the car now, and most owners never find out. Campaigns marked "do not drive" are red. A FULL OBD2 TOOLBOX (with an ELM327 adapter) • Read the whole car in one pass, with a PDF report for your mechanic • Pre-purchase check: codes cleared before a viewing, reset monitors, mileage across modules and open recalls (Pro) • Control units: Pistonly learns which CAN ID a module answers from, so modules that used to stay silent now answer, named by what they report. A scan stops and resumes where it left off. • Live sensors, on-board monitors (Mode 06) and I/M readiness • Service functions, odometer cross-check, freeze frame and CSV logging FREE • The AI diagnostician: 5 full analyses every month • Oil and fuel for your engine, and service reminders that arrive on time • Fault codes in plain English, with the can-I-drive verdict • The dashboard light explainer, no adapter needed • Drive Mode: a full-screen dashboard for the phone mount, with lap timing • Safety recalls, the health score, your garage, service book and interview • Control units, live sensors, Mode 06, readiness, trip computer PISTONLY PRO • Unlimited AI diagnoses and follow-up chat • Manufacturer parameters and enhanced PIDs • Pre-purchase check and odometer rollback check • Service functions and CSV data logging • More than one car in your garage, each with its own history • Or bring your own Claude or Perplexity API key Monthly, annual, or a one-time lifetime unlock. Cancel anytime. PRIVATE BY DESIGN No account, no sign-up. Your garage, history and VIN stay on your device, and the VIN is never sent to our servers. Signed in to iCloud? Everything backs up there. Pistonly is advisory: strong hypotheses and a checklist, not a final verdict. Works with any ELM327-compatible Bluetooth OBD2 adapter. No adapter? Try the built-in demo. What’s New
WHAT OIL, WHICH FUEL The question every owner has when nothing is broken. In the shop there is a wall of cans, all of them say "suitable", and the choice gets made on price. Pistonly answers it for your engine: the manufacturer approval, not just the viscosity, the capacity and the interval, the octane your engine actually requires against the octane worth paying for, and what owners of this engine typically get wrong. Free, and no adapter needed. WHAT ACTUALLY FIXED THIS CODE A code card used to end with a hypothesis. Now it also carries evidence: the parts that fixed this code on the same model and generation, reported by owners who came back and said what worked. Nothing is shown until three independent reports agree, because one answer is a coincidence, not a pattern. Above that sits your own service book: if you already did work for this code, the card says so, and says the code came back after it. SERVICE REMINDERS The app has been working out the schedule since 1.6, but you only found out you were overdue by opening the screen, which is a reminder for people who already remember. Now it tells you. Everything overdue on one car arrives as a single message rather than three in a row, and reminders are off until you turn them on. A REPORT FOR THE MECHANIC The codes screen could export JSON and CSV, which are formats for another program. At a service desk somebody looks at a sheet of paper or at your phone. The new PDF holds the same content in a readable shape: the car, every code with its plain-language name and the can-I-drive verdict, and what you already did for those codes. That last part is what saves the mechanic half an hour. THE VALUES ONLY THIS APP READS, NOW IN THE RECORDING A recorded drive used to hold standard sensors only. Now manufacturer parameters ride along: transmission oil temperature, the pressure in one particular tyre, an EV cell. The AI analysis of the drive sees them too, so a verdict can rest on the value that actually explains the behaviour. MORE OF IT IS FREE Five full AI analyses a month instead of three. Drive Mode with lap timing is now free. The dashboard light explainer got a budget of its own, so asking about a light no longer eats into your analyses. MODULES Select all or clear the selection in one tap, and the count follows what you tick by hand afterwards. FIXES • Pro subscribers were being held to the free monthly limit and refused from the sixth analysis. Fixed, and the limit for Pro is gone as it always should have been. • The VIN could reach our servers inside a module identification when you asked what a module was. It never leaves the device now, on the client and on the server. • The batch counter could read "8 of 5" while reading or clearing modules. • The record button in the drive log looked active while it was disabled.
