THE DATA All debt figures come from the U.S. Department of the Treasury Fiscal Data API — the same official government source used to report the national debt to the public. This is public domain data, freely available, and updated daily on business days. The live ticking counter is an extrapolation based on the real average rate of debt growth over the past year. It is clearly an estimate — the U.S. Treasury does not publish a real-time debt feed. US Debt is non-partisan. It presents official data without editorial commentary or political advocacy.
